词汇对英语学习的重要性不问可知。在上上周的文章中，我们为各人简单介绍了英语单词的构词法以及英语语言的起源和发展，而且分析了部门常见的词根词缀，进行了单词训练。
学习重在积累，将知识一点一点地聚沙成塔，会有巨大的进步。在今天的这篇文章中，我们为各人分析了四组词根（以及配套练习），之所以选择这四组词根，一是因为它们与高考词汇贴近，而又高于高考，学会了可以成为阅读、完型猜生词的利器；二是因为这四组词根可以组成近1000个英语中的难记词，掌握这四组词根，对各人今后的英语学习有非常大的资助！
sub/hyper
sub和hyper是一组反义词缀
先来看一下我们非常熟悉的一些带有“sub”的单词：
一辆“subway（地铁）”在地下穿行；一艘“submarine（潜水艇）”在海平面以下穿行；“subscribe”需要你文件的结尾签上自己的名字；一部电影的“subplot”是次于故事主线的次要情结。
在字典里找到“sub”开头的页面，我们可以看到许多的单词，可以总结出，“sub”这一词缀通常作为前缀使用，意思是：在……下面的，次于……的。
例：
subjugate: to conquer, to bring sth. under control; 控制、政府、使顺从
The countrys governemnt claimed it was just trying to protect national security, but some saw its actions as an attempt to subjugate the news media.
政府声称这是为了国家宁静，但是有些人认为政府的行为只是试图控制新闻媒体。
"jugate“的意思是并排的，结合在一起的，同义“paired, conjoined”。它本意是来自拉丁语“jugus”，就是英语单词“yoke（束缚、结合）”的意思。所以subjugate这个单词直译就是“把……束缚起来”。农民将非常重的木头制成牛轭束缚在在耕牛的肩膀上来控制它们。在古罗马时期，被俘的士兵必须从牛轭下钻过以示投降。
subliminal: inadequate to produce a sensation or a perception; 微小到难以察觉的，潜意识的
A few worried parents claimed that some heavy-metal songs contain subliminal messages---in the form of words recorded backwards---that urge young fans to take up devil worship.
一些忧心忡忡的家长声称部门重金属歌曲通过倒放录音的方式生存某种潜意识的信息，这些信息会促使年轻粉丝们开始崇敬魔鬼。
拉丁词汇“limen”的意思是“threshold（入口、门槛）”，“subliminal”字面意思就是在门槛之下的，连入口都没措施到达，那就是潜在的了。在平时的广告中，商家会传递许多信息，有一些事直抒胸臆的，有一些则是旁敲侧击，潜意识地影响目标人群。我们平时看到广告时，可以试着想到一些它的“subliminal message”哦。
接下来我们看一下hyper。与sub意思相反，hyper表现的是“在……之上，凌驾……的”，与前缀“super”意思相近。
货币市场遭受“hyperinflation（恶性通货膨胀）”是十分糟糕的；“hypersensitive（十分敏感的）”的人对外界变革反应超出凡人；一个“hypercritical（严苛的，吹毛求疵的）”的人很少给出好的评价。
例：
hyperbole: extreme exaggeration; 夸张
The food at Chez Pierre was good, but it couldnt live up to the hyperbole of the restaurant critics.
Chez Pierre的食物很好吃，但是并没有餐厅评论家说得那样夸张。
对于广告商、评论员来说，夸张是再寻常不外的手段。推出新品时，商家总是说这比以往任何产物都好，评论员也总爱说“这是历代级的舞台、历代级的角逐”。政治家也是典型的hyperbolic人物，为达目的什么话都会说。
hypertension: high blood pressure; 高血压，过度紧张
Pregnancy is often accompanied by mild hypertension that doesnt threaten the mothers life.
怀孕通常伴有轻微的高血压，但是并不敷以威胁孕妇的生命。
tension对于各人来说是一个比力熟悉的单词了，意为紧张、压力。十分紧张、压力非常大的情况下就有可能引发高血压了。

anim
“anim"来自拉丁语“anima”，意思是“breath（呼吸），soul（灵魂）”。我们最熟悉的单词“animal”就是表现能够呼吸、有灵魂的生物，也就是动物，包罗人类在内。
例：
magnanimous: 1. showing a lofty and courageous spirit; 2. generous and forgiving：高贵勇敢的；宽宏大量的
She was magnanimous in victory, saying that shed been lucky to win and praising her opponents effort.
她在获胜时十分漂亮，她说她很幸运能获胜，而且赞扬了对手的努力。
“magn”开头的单词通常表现大的，宽阔的这一积极意义，例如我们熟悉的单词magnificent（壮阔的，宏伟的）；magnify（放大，赞美）。magnanimity字面意思是伟大的心灵，一个真正拥有伟心灵的人能够坦然面对得失，得而不骄，失而不怨。

fig
“fig”来自拉丁语，作动词意为“to shape or mold”，即制作、塑造，作名词意为“a form or shape”，形式或形状。我们熟悉的单词“figure”就可以有形状的意思，既可以是人的体型、身材，也可以是物体的形状；通过“transfiguration”可以改变形状或者外表；如果遭受“disfiguring”就太不幸了，这是因伤而身体的某一部门变形。
例：
effigy: an image of a person, especially a crude representation of a hated person. 雕像，肖像，尤其是代表令人憎恨的人。
The night before the big game, an effigy of the rival coach was burned on a huge bonfire.
在大赛的前一天晚上，对手教练的肖像被一场大火烧掉了。
古埃及人的习俗是把一个死人的肖像连同他的尸体一起埋葬。他们认为，如果人死后身体发生了什么变革，这个肖像可以替代。现在，effigy通常指的是那些被愤怒的抗议者和不守规矩的学生滥用的原始人物。女巫下咒用的巫蛊娃娃也可以被称为effigy.
figment: something made up or imagined. 虚构的事物
In a twist on ID theft, criminals are deploying figments of their imaginations, in what is often called synthetic-identity fraud.
在打击身份偷窃的行动中，犯罪分子利用他们的想象力，进行“假身份欺诈”的活动。
可以这样来记这个单词的意思：“ment”是一个典型的名词后缀，将“给……定形象”这一动作名词化，我们就可以理解为创造一个形象，也就是虚拟的事物。它的同义词有“daydream; delusion”等等。在文学作品中，大多数虚构的东西都是日常生活中的恐惧和希望。例如当广播剧《世界大战》在1938年播出时，它在成千上万的人中间引起了恐慌，但他们没有意识到火星人的入侵只是作者的想象。

mill, hemi/semi
我们再来看几个数词词根
“mill”表现1000，第1000。我们常说的千年就是millennium；一“milligram”是1/1000克，也就是一毫克；一“milliliter"是一毫升；一“millimeter”就是一毫米。
例：
millefleur: having a pattern of small flowers and plants all over. 万花斑驳的
She was painstakingly embroidering a millefleur pattern on a pillow casing.
她正煞费苦心地在枕套上绣千花图案
millefleur这个词来法语，最初是拉丁语的mille flores，意大利语中也有相似的单词millefiori。
“hemi”来自希腊语，“semi”来自拉丁语，都表现一半。地球的半球是“hemisphere”，半圈是“semicircle”。
例：
semicolon: the punctuation mark ;, used chiefly to separate major sentence elements such as independent clauses. 分号
Some young vandal had done a search-and-replace on Mr. Marshs computer file, and in place of every semicolon was the mysterious message "Hendrix RULES!".
一些年轻的文化破坏者在Marsh先生的计算机文件上进行了搜索替换，将每个分号都替换为神秘信息“Hendrix RULES！”

mand
“mand”来自拉丁语“mandare”，意思是“entrust （委托，信托）”或者“order （命令）”。对于这个词根，我们熟悉的单词有“command （命令）”，来自上帝的命令是戒律“commandment”，突击队员“commando”组成一小队在战争中赴汤蹈火。
例：
mandate: 1. a formal command; 2. permission to act, given by the people to their representatives. 授权、委托
The new president claimed his landslide victory was a mandate from the voters to end the war.
新上任的总统声称他的压倒性胜利是一个选民委托他结束战争的任务。
mandate通常是指非常正式的命令和授权，在军事和政治中常被用到。来自领导的mandate通常是无法拒绝的，这就又得到了一个形容词“mandatory”：强制的、命令的，这也是无法拒绝的。
remand: 1. to order a case sent back to another court or agency for further action; 2. to send a prisoner back into custody to await further trial or sentencing. 遣返、送还、还押
The state supreme court had remanded the case to the superior court, instructing it to consider the new evidence.
州最高法院已将案件送还至高级法院，指示其审查新的证据。
remand通常用案件审理的情况中。在下级法院败诉后，律师会经常向上级法院提起上诉。如果上级法院审理案件而且发现下级法院犯了某些错误，那么它就会简单地将其还押，同时告诉下级法院第一次如何做坏事：例如，不要彻底指导陪审团，不要考虑最近的相关法院判决。
